DESCRIPTION
The Agreement Usually Isn’t What You Came For
You wanted the job, apartment, subscription, service, account or purchase. Then a contract appeared as the gate you had to pass through.
The hard part isn’t simply reading more words. It’s knowing which terms could actually matter, what questions remain unanswered, and what choices you realistically have.
The Fine Print is a four-week, live small-group experience where you learn a systematic way to identify material terms, examine rights, obligations, risk, remedies and practical alternatives, and use AI without surrendering your judgment.
No legal background required. The program is educational and does not provide individualized legal advice.

THE LIVE DIFFERENCE
AI can read a contract. It can’t make the judgment for you.
An AI tool can summarize an agreement in seconds. That can be useful. But a confident answer is not the same thing as a trustworthy analysis.
Did it miss something? Can you trace the answer to the agreement? Is an outside claim accurate? How serious is the risk in your situation? What alternatives do you actually have?
That’s where the group matters.
In live sessions, other members notice what you miss, challenge interpretations, compare bargaining contexts and help red-team the AI-assisted method. You are not simply learning beside other people. Other people are part of how the analysis gets better.

WHAT YOU BUILD
A method you can use again.
-
Spot what matters. Identify provisions that allocate rights, obligations, risk, remedies, data or control rights, and bargaining power.
-
Use AI deliberately. Decide what is appropriate to share with an AI service, structure the analysis, trace the evidence, and test the output rather than accepting a generic summary.
-
Evaluate context and uncertainty. Separate what the agreement says from outside claims, assumptions and questions that still need verification.
-
Understand your choices. Examine practical alternatives, constraints and leverage without assuming every standardized term is unfair or negotiable.
-
Make the call. Decide whether your next step is to accept, seek clarification, negotiate, compare alternatives, escalate, seek qualified help—or do nothing.
-
Leave with something concrete. Build a Fine Print Decision Brief and a tested AI review process you can reuse.

WHY THIS MATTERS
You shouldn’t need to become a lawyer to ask better questions.
Consequential agreements can be long, technical and standardized. They can govern cancellation, liability, arbitration, data use, payment, modification, remedies and other terms that may matter well after you click Accept.
The practical response is often understandable: scroll, click, move on.
The Fine Print offers another option: slow down when the stakes justify it, find the terms that deserve attention, investigate the evidence and trade-offs, and decide what the agreement means for you.
You won’t be told what conclusion to reach. The point is to improve the quality of the judgment that remains yours.
WHO THIS IS FOR
Adults facing a current or recurring agreement decision—or anyone who wants a reusable way to handle consequential agreements. You may work with a real, redacted or sample agreement. Curiosity matters more than legal knowledge.
WHAT YOU’LL GAIN
Use a systematic framework to find material terms, map power and alternatives, examine risk and remedies, review AI data practices, build and test an AI-assisted analysis, and challenge your reasoning with a live small group.
WHAT YOU’LL LEAVE WITH
A Fine Print Decision Brief, a tested AI review process, and experience applying a repeatable method to an agreement. You decide what to do with what you find.

PROGRAM STRUCTURE
Four weeks. One increasingly disciplined way to decide.
Week | Focus | The Work |
|---|---|---|
01 | The Agreement You Did Not Negotiate | What kind of agreement is this, what matters, and what practical choice do I have? Map material terms, participation, power and alternatives. |
02 | Consumer Agency, Risk and AI | What should I ask of the agreement—and of the AI service before I upload it? Examine rights, obligations, risk, remedies, criteria and AI data practices. |
03 | Build and Break the Prompt | Can I trust this analysis enough to use it? Build an auditable prompt, trace source evidence, verify outside claims and red-team the output. |
04 | Judgment and Shared Value | What does the analysis mean for me? Complete your Decision Brief, compare reasoning and choose a proportionate next step. Consider what responsible sharing would require. |

WHERE THIS CAN LEAD
Four weeks can solve one problem—and reveal the next useful question.
The program can end after four weeks. You can take the method with you and use it privately the next time an agreement deserves closer scrutiny.
If useful unfinished work emerges, members may choose to continue: examine more cases, improve the review method, test tools, join another STAND program or Community experience, or work with others on a verified resource.
Continuation is optional. Public sharing is never automatic; evidence, privacy, permission, ownership and quality matter.

THE BIGGER IDEA
Your economic life is part of your agency.
Understanding an agreement is not just about avoiding a bad deal. It is about becoming better able to understand the relationships you enter, recognize constraints and choices, evaluate uncertainty, and act with judgment.
That is one form of economic agency—and one expression of the larger STAND idea: Democracy is a learned practice.
The next time you click “I agree,” know what deserves your attention.
Learn to examine the terms. Use AI without surrendering your judgment. Test your thinking with people who will notice what you miss. Then decide for yourself.

TESTIMONIALS
From Program Alumni
"This class helped me think about course creation differently. It really helped me focus on my audience and tune in to meet their needs. Before taking this class, I struggled with narrowing my focus. Everything was clearly spelled out and explained, and I got way more out of the class than I originally thought I would — in a good and surprising way."

TESTIMONIALS
From Program Alumni
"I loved the interactions with the other members and how each person brought a unique and valuable perspective to the table. This was a very collaborative and productive way to participate together remotely. As an introvert, I was worried that I wouldn’t enjoy the collaboration pieces, but that was actually my favorite part.”
